Rachel Brosnahan

Rachel Elizabeth Brosnahan was born July 12, 1990. American actress Rachel Elizabeth Brosnahan was born July 12, 1990.  Her recurring role as Rachel Posner in Netflix’s political thriller series House of Cards (2013)-2015 was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award. She also played a leading role in WGN’s drama series Manhattan (2014)-2015.

Early life

Brosnahan was the daughter of Carol and Earl Brosnahan who were children’s publishers. Brosnahan’s mother is British, while her father is American and Irish. Brosnahan, age four, was raised in Highland Park (Illinois).  Her younger siblings are her brother and sister.  She is the niece of Kate Spade (nee Brosnahan), a late fashion designer. 

Brosnahan isn’t of Jewish descent, despite being well-known for her portrayal of a Jewish character in television (Mrs. Maisel on The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel). Brosnahan says that she was “hapily immersed” in Jewish culture because of Highland Park, Illinois. 

She attended Wayne Thomas Elementary and Northwood Junior High Schools.  She was a performer in musical theatre during high school and junior high. She was part of the Highland Park High School wrestling team for two seasons and was also a snowboarding instructor.  She took a class from Carole Dibo when she was 16 years old, the director of Wilmette’s Actors Training Center. Carole is Brosnahan’s manager.  Brosnahan graduated in 2012 from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. 


Brosnahan, still in high school when she was a teenager, got her first movie role as Lisa in The Unborn (2009) by Michael Bay. In college, she was a guest star in single episodes on television shows such as Gossip Girl and The Good Wife and In Treatment. She began to land recurring roles in television series like The Blacklist (2014), a crime drama, and Black Box (2014), a short-lived medical drama.

In 2009, she appeared on stage for the first time in Up at Steppenwolf Theatre She then made her Broadway debut in The Big Knife in 2013 with Roundabout Theatre Company.  She played Desdemona at New York Theatre Workshop in 2016 alongside Daniel Craig and David Oyelowo. 

She starred in House of Cards, a critically acclaimed Netflix political drama with Robin Wright and Kevin Spacey. She was initially scheduled for two episodes but Beau Willimon saw her potential and decided to expand her character. She was a star in her own right and received a nomination for Outstanding Guest Actress in Drama Series by Primetime Emmy Awards.

In 2018, it was reported that Brosnahan had been married to actor Jason Ralph . But she later admitted in January 2019 that they had been married for years before their relationship became public.  They both attended the 2019 76th Golden Globe Awards ceremony, where she thanked him during his acceptance speech. 

Brosnahan completed the “Live Below the Line Challenge” twice.
