Emily Blunt

British actress Emily Olivia Leah Blunt was born 23 February 1983. Her accolades include a Screen Actors Guild Award and a Golden Globe Award. She has also been nominated for three British Academy Film Awards. Forbes listed her among the top-paid actresses worldwide in 2020.

Blunt’s acting debut was in 2001’s stage production of The Royal Family. Blunt appeared in Boudica (2003), and was also the Queen Catherine Howard in Henry VIII (2003). In the drama My Summer of Love (2004), she made her feature film debut. Blunt’s breakthrough was in 2006 when she starred in Gideon’s Daughter, a comedy-drama, and The Devil Wears Prada. Blunt won a Golden Globe Award as Best Supporting Actress, while the latter earned her a nomination to the BAFTA Award as Best Actress in Supporting Role.

Early life

Emily Olivia Leah Blunt, second of four children, was born 23 February 1983 in London Borough of Wandsworth. She is the second child of Joanna Blunt (QC), a former actress, teacher, and barrister. Her siblings are Felicity and Sebastian. Her grandfather was Major General Peter Blunt. Crispin Blunt is a Conservative Member of Parliament for Reigate.

Blunt struggled with stuttering from age 7 to 14. Blunt credits her school teacher with helping her to manage her stuttering through acting. She was elected to the American Institute for Stuttering’s board of directors. Blunt was educated at Ibstock Place School, Roehampton, south London, and then, aged 16, she went to Hurtwood House, near Dorking, Surrey. This private sixth-form college is known for its performing arts program. An agent discovered Blunt and signed her.

Career

2001-2004: The beginning of work

Blunt was a professional debutant in Peter Hall’s production in November 2001 of The Royal Family. She played the role as Gwen Cavendish’s granddaughter to Judi Dench’s Fanny Cavendish. Tom Keatinge, a critic, praised the production and wrote that Anthony Ward’s set and Peter Hall’s direction made The Royal Family an entertaining night. He also noted that the show was a platform for acting, with strong performances by the entire ensemble. Blunt won the Evening Standard’s “Best Newcomer Award” for her performance. In 2002, Blunt was cast as Eugenie in Nicholas Wright’s Vincent in Brixton at The National Theatre and as Juliet at Indhu Rubasingham’s Romeo and Juliet production at Chichester Festival Theatre. Blunt’s screen debut was in 2003’s British television drama Boudica. It is about the life and times of an ancient Celtic warrior-queen, who faced the Romans. She was also praised for her “smart” attitude that year.

Personal life

Blunt was in a three-year long relationship with Canadian singer Michael Buble. They met backstage at the 2005 Australian television Logie Awards in Melbourne. After moving to Vancouver, British Columbia in 2005, they shared a house together, but split in 2008.

In November 2008, Blunt began dating American actor John Krasinski. They were engaged in August 2009 and got married in Como, Italy on 10 July 2010. They live in Brooklyn Heights, New York City. They have two daughters, one born in 2014, the other in 2016.

Blunt was made the sister-in law of Stanley Tucci in 2012 when he married Felicity.

Blunt was naturalized a citizen of the United States in August 2015. Blunt took dual citizenship in the United States. This status may have helped her tax situation. However, she says that it has made her feel “conflicted”.
