Eliza Coupe

Eliza Kate Coupe was born April 6, 1981. She is an American comedian, actress, model and comedian. Her roles include Jane Kerkovich-Williams on ABC’s comedy series Happy Endings, Denise “Jo” Mahoney on Scrubs’ final two seasons, Tiger on Hulu’s comedy series Future Man, and Hannah Wyland in Quantico. In 2022, she starred in Fox’s comedy Pivoting.

Early life

Coupe was born in Plymouth, New Hampshire, to Ernest and Kathryn. She has two brothers, Sam, and Thom. She graduated from Plymouth Regional High School, her hometown in 1999. She is of Scottish, English, and French heritage.

Coupe was involved in the theatre program at her high school. She was Bonnie in Anything Goes, and a Mundy sister at Dancing at Lughnasa. In 2006, she graduated from California Institute of the Arts (CalArts).

Career

Coupe studied improvisational comedy at The Groundlings, ImprovOlympic, and in 2003 she toured France as a soldier in an all-female King Lear version. Her one-woman sketch show, The Patriots, premiered at New York’s Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre on November 5, 2005. It won her the Breakout Performer Award from HBO’s U.S. In March 2006, she hosted the Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen.

She appeared in 2007’s I Think I Love My Wife. Short Circuitz, a short-lived MTV series featuring her, was also her debut. She appeared in episode 8 of Flight of the Conchords’ “Girlfriends” and an episode of Unhitched. She was a regular series regular on HBO’s 12 Miles of Bad Road, and a recurring character in Samantha Who?

In Season 8 of Scrubs, she played the role of Dr. Denise “Jo” Mahoney. In Season 9, she was named a regular.

Coupe was cast in March 2009 as Callie on the ABC pilot No Heroics. This adaptation of the UK series of that name was filmed in Shanghai, China. She was the lead female role and the love interest of Daniel Henney in Shanghai Calling in 2012. The film was filmed in Shanghai, China. She was also in the 2011 film What’s Your Number? With Anna Faris, Chris Evans.

From April 2011 to May 2013, Coupe was a star on ABC’s ensemble comedy series Happy Endings, alongside Elisha Cuthbert and Zachary Knighton, Adam Pally and Damon Wayans Jr. The show was cancelled by ABC on May 3, 2013, despite critical acclaim. It also gained a cult following. After Happy Endings was cancelled, she played a recurring part in the third season of House of Lies. She also starred with Jay Harrington on the comedy series Benched. It premiered October 28, 2014. Later, she starred as Hannah Wyland, the FBI agent in Quantico on ABC.

Coupe also played the role of Tiger in Future Man, a comedy series on Hulu that premiered November 14, 2017. The third and final season aired on 2020.

She was cast in April 2020 as Amy on Fox’s comedy series Pivoting. The show debuted on January 9, 2022 to positive reviews. However, it was cancelled after just one season.

Personal life

From December 2007 to June 2013, Coupe was married to Randall Whittinghill, an actor and puppeteer.

On November 27, 2014, she posted an Instagram announcement about her engagement to Darin Olien (founder of lifestyle brand SuperLife). They got married while they were on vacation in New Zealand on December 24, 2014.

Coupe was diagnosed in childhood with ADHD and dyslexia.
